Employees and students of the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg, HAW Ansbach, the Hochschule Aschaffenburg, HAW Coburg, TH Ingolstadt, TH Nürnberg and the KU Eichstätt-Ingolstadt currently have access to 50 GB of cloud storage free of charge. At the FAU the project FAUbox was implemented by the Regional Computer Center Erlangen (RRZE) and draws back to the „Powerfolder“ software.
„Powerfolder“ by the dal33t company is in his functionality closely related to the by now commonly known web space „Dropbox“. All the data is stored on the servers of the RRZE, though after authentication over the cloud service the data can be accessed from various devices all over the world – from computers at the office, smartphones or laptops- using an encoded connection. Therefore, users always have access to the most current version of the same files.
Using web interface or an installed client on your device, you can easily login to FAUbox on https://faubox.rrze.uni-erlangen.de. Every student and staff member who is momentarily registered at the Identity Management (IdM) is granted access to this service.
For the sign-in process via Single Sign-on (SSO), you need to use your IdM username and your password
Using native clients, FAUbox is compatible with the following operating systems: Windows, Linux, Mac, Android and iOS. Additionally a web client is available. Furthermore, it is assured that at any time each device is operating with password-protected access only. The synchronization of your data works automatically.
Sensitive files of transregional academic projects and other working groups can now be stored at the FAU using the university‘s cloud space, while having full access control. FAUbox is a non-profit service only intended for research, studies and education.
Unlike other providers on the internet offering cloud space for free, all the required systems necessary for the service of FAUbox are located at the RRZE and therefore can only be accessed and operated by staff working there.
On virtualization hardware there are two apache-servers, operating as SSL-proxy, and three „service nodes“ taking care of basic functions such as managing data, access and permission rights. The data storage containing the file archive for the meta data and the files of the cloud, is operating on a hardware without virtualization. Furthermore, there are up to seven servers working to make sure that your data is just on the right place where you need it. A load balancer is used for ensuring load distribution and safeguarding against failure.
